FIFA is expanding its Web3 ambitions by launching a purpose-built blockchain platform, Avalanche. Its purpose and primary purpose is to host the growing ecosystem of digital collectibles.
It was developed in collaboration with Modex, the new layer-one network, and will power FIFA Collect, a platform focused on football-themed NFTs and interactive experiences.
Instead of using existing shared infrastructure, FIFA is choosing a blockchain built from scratch to meet the demands of global sports fans. The move to this custom network, which is expected to begin towards the end of May, aims to improve the performance, security and scalability of digital assets related to football history, players and global events.
Avalanche confirmed the news on X, describing the project as a purpose-built first layer for football culture and fan engagement. Modex, the infrastructure partner, is tasked with not only developing the blockchain but also modernizing the FIFA Collect marketplace.
The move follows earlier experiments by FIFA during the 2022 World Cup, which saw the launch of blockchain-based games and collectibles. It also builds on recent initiatives such as FIFA Rivals, a mobile game announced in partnership with Mythical Games that will feature its own NFT trading system.
As the sports world increasingly moves towards Web3, the FIFA blockchain aims to offer fans more than just digital items – it creates an interactive environment where fandom and technology meet.
