Philippine Senator Bam Aquino is preparing a groundbreaking bill that would see the entire national budget managed through a blockchain system.
The move, unveiled at the „Manila Tech Summit“, aims to take transparency in government finances to a new level.
Aquino said he would introduce a bill in the coming weeks to digitize budget management and government transactions through blockchain, calling it a “bold step toward radical openness” that would allow citizens to track every peso in real time.
“Few would like all their transactions to be visible, but we believe it is time to take this step,” the senator said.
In a subsequent Facebook post, he emphasized that such a system would remove much of the opacity surrounding government funds. By recording every allocation and every transaction in an immutable manner, blockchain would ensure transparency and accountability not only to institutions but also to society.
Aquino added that if the proposal goes ahead, the Philippines could become the first country in the world to manage its national budget on blockchain, but he acknowledged that it remains unclear how broad political support the initiative will receive.
