Litecoin is making a big move into the DeFi (decentralised finance) and Web3 space with the launch of LitVM, a new layer 2 network that aims to bring smart contract functionality to the leading and established cryptocurrency.
Unveiled at the Litecoin Summit in Las Vegas, the LitVM project is led by Lunar Digital Assets in collaboration with the Litecoin Foundation. Built using BitcoinOS and Polygon’s Chain Development Kit (CDK), the network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and uses zero-knowledge technology to enable secure and trustless interactions.
This marks a significant shift for LTC, which has traditionally focused on speed and simplicity for everyday payments since its inception in 2011. With LitVM, the network expands its utility to support programmable applications, cross-network asset movement, and more complex financial products.
Litecoin's creator, Charlie Lee, emphasized that the project remains true to the principles that have defined blockchain for more than a decade – security and reliability while opening the door to modern applications, such as smart contracts.
LitVM aims to open up a new level of possibilities for the altcoin ecosystem. Its launch could pave the way for tokenization of real-world assets, stablecoin-based payments, and blockchain innovations like Runes and Lordinals – features that were previously outside the technical reach of Litecoin.
By entering the layer-two space, LTC is positioning itself to evolve alongside more advanced networks while offering its community access to an ever-widening array of decentralized financial instruments.
