In 2024 Thailand has taken a remarkable step forward in the field of cryptocurrencies with the introduction of its digital asset regulations. The move marked the country's growing interest in digital currencies, with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra championing the use of Bitcoin in the tourism sector.
Thaksin, a prominent supporter of cryptocurrencies, recently proposed a pilot project in Phuket to use Bitcoin for tourism payments. He believes that the integration of digital currencies can match Thailand's strengths, especially in attracting technology-oriented tourists and investors. However, this initiative faces obstacles as the Bank of Thailand currently prohibits the use of Bitcoin for payments.
The central bank oversees the country's payment systems, while the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulates digital assets. To proceed with such an experiment would require cooperation between the SEC and the central bank.
Thaksin, who has long supported the adoption of cryptocurrencies, also made bold predictions about the future of Bitcoin, predicting a potential price of $850,000. He also proposed the creation of government-backed stablecoins to increase liquidity. According to him, these steps will stimulate the Thai economy by complying with the global trends in the field of cryptocurrencies. Although his vision is ambitious, the Thai government has yet to formally embrace the idea.
The cryptocurrency landscape in Thailand is growing rapidly, with in 2024 there will be approximately 15.43 million cryptocurrency users, representing over 21% of the population. Despite this progress, however, the country has seen a decline in global rankings. Thailand has dropped from 10th to 16th in Chainalysis' index for global cryptocurrency adoption in 2024, showing that while the country is embracing digital assets, it faces challenges to keep pace with global developments.
