X Chat: The new encrypted alternative to WhatsApp without ads

Elon Musk is preparing to launch a new standalone messaging platform called X Chat. The idea is to compete with Telegram and WhatsApp through end-to-end encryption and no advertising tracking. He appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he shared that the app should launch "within a few months."
Musk described X Chat as a peer-to-peer encrypted messenger using an encryption model "similar to Bitcoin." He emphasized that the app will prioritize privacy over monetization, or in other words: "No advertising cookies," Musk said. "If an app knows enough about your messages to show you ads, that's a huge security vulnerability."
Focused on surpassing WhatsApp in privacy
Although Meta's WhatsApp claims to use end-to-end encryption via the Signal Protocol, Musk noted that the platform still collects metadata. One example is who users communicate with and how often. By default, data from chat backups also remains unencrypted.
The FAQ section itself confirms that WhatsApp shares certain user information with other Meta products depending on integrations. This happens without directly stating whether the company sells data. The main idea behind X Chat is to completely eliminate these risks.
A fully encrypted alternative within X
According to Musk, X Chat will be available both as an integrated feature within the X platform and as a standalone app offering private text messaging, file sharing, voice and video calls.
"Our goal is to replace Twitter's old direct messaging system with a fully encrypted infrastructure," Musk explained. "I'm not saying it will be perfect, but it will be the least insecure messaging app on the market."
