DOGE is the cryptocurrency that is almost automatically associated with Elon Musk, as the Tesla CEO has repeatedly shown on Twitter that the coin featuring a Shiba Inu dog logo is his favorite. DOGE was created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer in December 2013 as a fork of Litecoin. Palmer is credited with turning the idea into reality.
He purchased the domain Dogecoin.com and added a simple splash screen. Markus reached out to Palmer after seeing the site, and the two began developing the currency, albeit as a joke. Marcus designed the Dogecoin protocol, using the existing Luckycoin and Litecoin protocols as a foundation. The coin’s logo features the well-known and popular Doge meme, which uses the image of a Shiba Inu.
Contrary to all expectations and predictions, DOGE became a top cryptocurrency on the market, mainly thanks to the buzz surrounding the coin on social media and its accessibility to a wide range of demographics around the world. One of the creators’ main ideas is for DOGE to be a fun cryptocurrency, in order to attract more people beyond the usual Bitcoin audience.
